The Five Best Boutiques on the Upper East Side

The Upper East Side of Manhattan is widely known for its abundance of greenery—thanks to Central Park—its array of stellar restaurants and bars, its wealth of cultural institutions, and the shopping. There are many big-name department stores, sure, but it’s the independent boutiques that shine in this neighborhood. Take a stroll from any of Urbana’s Central Park luxury apartments, and you’ll find yourself near some of the city’s best boutiques. Here are a few of our favorites.

Joie | 1196 Madison Avenue, New York, NY

Originating in Southern California back in 2001, Joie has become well-known from coast to coast for vibrant and versatile women’s fashion with a French flair. They refer to their designs as “feminine,” effortless,” and “carefree,” and that’s precisely the energy the pieces exude. Their Madison Avenue location is a wonderful little boutique blanketed in natural light.

Intermix | 1003 Madison Avenue, New York, NY

Intermix has a few boutiques throughout the city, but the one in the Upper East Side is one of their largest and most robust collections in the region. Intermix has been a curator of on-trend women’s fashions for 26 years and counting, and a visit to one of their boutiques provides a personalized and unique shopping experience.

Fivestory | 18 East 69th Street, New York, NY

Housed in a two-story townhouse, Fivestory is the creation of young fashion maven Claire Distenfeld. What sets Fivestory apart is Distenfeld’s eye. Celebrated brands mix here with upstarts you have almost certainly never heard of. The racks are filled with eclectic and daring creations that all go together with remarkable cohesion. This is the place to visit if you wish to discover the next great designer.

Hayward House | 131 East 70th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY

Founded by Marin Hopper in 2008, Hayward started with hand-to-hand sales and trunk shows before growing large enough for brick and mortar in 2015. Also set in a stunning townhouse, Hayward House is worth a visit to experience the quirky opulence of the space itself—and Hayward’s gorgeous handbags are displayed throughout. If you’re in the market for a serious new bag, stop here.

Alexis Bittar | 1100 Madison Avenue, New York, NY

If you’re looking for bright, thoughtfully designed accessories, Alexis Bittar is a must-visit. Her Upper East Side boutique is designed like a pristine, pastel jungle, and her earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets line the walls of the small but irresistibly charming space. Her creations are decidedly modern, but with a timeless appeal, and the massive range of her designs means there’s something for everyone.
